Haiti, Grand Goave (Thozin)

Community Transformation

Located along the Caribbean coast of the Gulf of Gonave in the southwest part of the country, the general population of the city and surrounding area is 36,500. Grand Goave was founded by the Spanish at the end of the 16th century, and is one of the oldest cities in Haiti. The history of Haiti’s corrupt governments and military coups have resulted in a high rate of inflation, lack of investment, and a severe trade deficit; these economic factors have plunged the country into its lowest levels of poverty furthering the degradation of social security and the environment. Haiti lies in the middle of the hurricane belt and Grand Goave has suffered severe infrastructure damage due to these storms. Low levels of skilled labour, a low literacy rates and continued natural disasters perpetuate the cycle of poverty and hinder the development process.

Water Well Project
Clean water is vital and necessary to achieving community development and there is a great need in all of Haiti for clean water sources. HaitiARISE is intent on helping to meet the immediate and future clean water needs of the people of Grand Goave so that they too can experience a healthier, cleaner lifestyle. The city of Grand Goave would benefit from an increase of at least 10 water wells needed at various locations throughout the city.

Goat Farm Project
In Haiti a healthy protein diet is scarce and usually quite expensive. We plan to begin dairy farming on HAM compound using goats. Goat milk can easily be made into cheese without the need for complicated or sophisticated equipment. This project will allow HAM to create a healthy food product that won't go bad, alongside making this technology available to local farmers in the community.

Residence Building
There is a need to add to the second floor of the residence building at Haiti ARISE. The residence building is the focal point of activity for HAM and also serves as living quarters for teams and-long term volunteers to the ministry. The second floor will be entirely furnished upon completion, and will include 2 sets of finished bathrooms, 4 bedrooms and a classroom, as well as other improvements to the overall building. The project will be completed employing people from the community, and students of HAM will be involved with the fabrication and furnishing aspects of the project.

Telus Laptop Project
A Telus employee from Surrey, B.C travelled to Grand Goave, Haiti as part of the Surrey Alliance Church team in November 2009. The team took part in working alongside Haiti ARISE Ministries who have a vision to raise up leaders in Haiti through education to strengthen their families, neighbours and country, bringing relief of poverty and stimulating the economy. This vision is carried out through a theological and trade school, where practical life skills are taught to young men and women who are hungry to learn.

Medical Clinic Project
We have been working alongside our partners at Haiti ARISE Ministries (HAM), which has given refuge for many people in the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake. Emergency medical care has been replaced with ongoing public healthcare. Providing a medical clinic will allow the community to have access to healthcare and will help to further demonstrate Haiti ARISE's passion for the people in Grand Goave.
