Cambodia, Kandal and Prey Veng

Community Transformation

Cambodia’s Kandal province has 11 districts and 117 communes and 1087 villages over a sparsely populated area, with nearly 50% of the population living in rural farming areas. Prey Veng province is located on the far side of the Mekong River in south-eastern Cambodia. It is a lush land consisting of 12 districts, 116 communes and 1139 villages with a population of 947,357. These provinces were greatly impacted by the civil war, as the Khmer Rouge ravaged the country killing many innocent people and destroying a vibrant society. Due to this catastrophe, the people of Cambodia have suffered a terrible set back as they lost everything and were plunged deep into poverty and hardship which has lasted over 35 years.

Since 1993, Asian Outreach Cambodia (AOC) has been working with the community members of Kandal and Prey Veng to develop a sense of personal and community responsibility so that they will take action in seeing their community holistically transformed. Through building strong ties within these communities, the relationships AOC forms help to determine the needs of the community so that they can work at improving life in Kandal and Prey Veng provinces for the next generations to come.

When AOC began its work in Kandal and Prey Veng, there was no church presence at all. Now there are four denominations with 18 churches. AOC works closely with Christian believers to empower and train them to deliver its development projects: Assisting Children to School (ACTS), HIV/AIDS-TB, Church Development, Women’s Empowerment and Water and Sanitation.

Our goal is to assist AOC in the areas of the construction of church and school buildings, agricultural training, medical team trips, children’s ministry, as well as training in church leadership, life-skills, and vocational areas.
