In an effort to provide women with another source of income, a sewing program has been set up. Women in nearby areas have the opportunity to participate in a sewing course. They are trained to create the typical Indian dresses: salwar kurta, saree blouses and petticoats as well as frocks. Women gather together in village centres to learn together. Once they complete the course, they take an official government exam for certification. As villages complete these sessions, new sessions are set up in other villages.

Sewing centre fashions independence

This sewing centre is changing lives every day! Here is a testimony of someone who has experienced the impact of learning a new skill:

“I used to be very worried. One day I came to know that a sewing centre is opening in our Ravidas Nagar. Sister Sujaata runs it, and she teaches them. She came to me and said to me, ‘Sister, don't worry. Come to my place and learn to stitch in Priscilla Sewing Centre. When you learn, you will stand on your own feet, and I am very excited, and I started going to the sewing centre.” I went to the sewing centre for six months and sister Sujaata taught me the complete work of sewing. I feel very happy

as I was learning so quickly. I completed my sewing course in six months, and I have learned the work of sewing completely. I thank the people who opened a training centre here, and I am fully trained in sewing. Today is big day in my life because I am giving exam of sewing. The examiner came from Delhi, and they asked me to show my practical file, taken written exam and sewing on machine. They were also satisfied by my proper learning throughout the six months.”
