Community Project: In progress
COVID Relief
, Haiti
As the COVID 19 pandemic sweeps across the globe, the government of Haiti followed many country's lead by locking down all non-essential services, international and domestic travel - forcing many who are already desperately poor deaper into poverty. For a vast majority of Haitians who live day-to-day, they simply do not have the savings, or food rations to endure a prolonged lockdown where their small businesses are closed, outdoor markets closed, and basic supply lines cut off.
In addition to the effects of the on-going economic and political crises in Haiti, our community is in the midst of the worst drought in 40 years and is facing the possibility of country-wide famine in the next few months. The biggest, direct impact that COVID 19 has had in our community thus far is to exacerbate these already existing survival threats.
Lemuel Ministries is responding to the water crisis by:
- Continuing efforts to dig and enlarge water reservoirs that catch rainwater and maintain canals
- Delivering truck loads of water to the community
They are also responding to the food crisis by:
- Supporting families, primarily through Temporary Work Programs using food boxes donated to us by a partner organization.
- Focusing efforts to assist local farmers, thereby striving to stabilize local food supply.
- Creating an emergency food reserve that can be used to help the most vulnerable.
Lemuel is responding to the COVID-19 crisis by doing their best in both word and action to educate the community about the virus, obey government mandates aimed at preventing the spread of the virus, and drive home the importance of personal hygiene, especially hand washing.
