Community Project: Ongoing
Fence, Tree Planting and Garden Project
, Haiti
The Fence, Tree Planting and Garden Project will provide a much needed first step toward reforestation and alimentary security: a fence. With free-range livestock, the only way to sustainably plant trees is to put up a fence. Whether it be for a family or on a plot of community land, each fence will give the Plateau community a boost toward reforesting their community. A fence also enables families in the community to start small gardens in their yards. While the drought has devastated the larger gardens year after year, a small garden next to their house, and the means to water it consistently, would provide a family with nourishment through these hard times.
Purpose:
- To fence in land so that trees can be planted and small subsistence gardens can be planted and sustained.
- To provide a way for young people to get involved in Lemuel’s work on the Plateau without falling into the pitfalls of entitlement-creating handouts or insignificant busy-work.
Goal:
- For families to have a small garden close to their house that can provide some level of nourishment when their larger gardens don’t produce.
- To advance reforestation by protecting plots of land from livestock and providing for the care of the young trees.
