Community Project: Ongoing
Covid Relief
, Malawi
As of Aug 9, 2020 - there are just over 4,600 cases of COVID-19. While this number may not seem like a lot, there are many crippling effects due to the government restrictions that have been put in place in order to reduce the spread of the virus. For example, public transportation is restricted to 50% of capacity increasing the cost of transport by 100%, resulting in less disposable income in an already poor nation.
With the restrictions in place, many have lost their jobs as businesses close with the impact of lower incomes and increased poverty. Students are not in school which contributes to a loss of education. Many healthcare professionals do not have the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to attend to the health of the villages and are at increased risk to their own personal health.
Timotheos had school feeding programs in place prior to the restrictions closing the schools. The impact from that is now many of the families previously being helped are often going 2 days without eating. To help alleviate the hunger, Timotheos has been providing emergency food packages consisting of a 20 liter water bucket, with 10kg maize meal, some soya pieces, salt, matches and soap. While this does not sound like much, it has the potential to feed a small family for a month.
