Jinja, Uganda
Jinja has a population of 75,000 people and is located 90 km east of the capital city of Kampala. The average annual household income is estimated to be $100 USD which is why many of the students and their families live in mud homes that are 10 by 15 feet. Uganda as a country has a high infant mortality rate (63 deaths/1,000 births) and life expectancy of 53 years old. The country has also struggled with the aids epidemic which ranks 9th in the world for the most deaths due to HIV/AIDS at 77,000 people a year.
