Philippines - Typhoon Phanfone Relief 2019
On Christmas Day, 2019, Category 2 Typhoon Phanfone struck the island of Boracay in Central Philippines causing widespread damage and loss of life. It is currently reported that 48 people perished from the storm, and a total of 374,000 homes across the entire region of the Philippines were damaged or destroyed.
On the island of Boracay, the telecommunications and electrical system has been crippled, ultimately cutting them off from the outside world. It is estimated that it will take more than 1 month to restore any power to the island. Gas shortages have resulted in a spike in price, as well as the increased demand for construction materials.
Hungry For Life is working with Strong Roots Ministry in an effort to provide for families who have been impacted as a result of the typhoon. Joven and Anita (Strong Roots Ministry) will be assessing communities that have been affected to bring food, medical supplies and water. Depending on the funds raised, houses will also be reconstructed for families who have lost their homes.
Additionally, the Oasis Hotel which Joven and Anita operate was damaged, resulting in an estimated $18,000 CAD in repairs.
