This post by Rylan and Kurtis
This morning everyone was still adjusting to the giant time change, so most were up around 2 or 3, am. However, everyone was pretty well rested and ready to get going on our projects.
We finished breakfast at 7:30. By 8 am we were on the road which was a very interesting drive. Our truck stalled on a hill and didn’t start again so we all got out and pushed it out of the way. After finding some local gas we thought we were good but still no start! Putting our mechanical “skills” together we decided it was lack of fuel so I sucked fuel out of the fuel line and that’s all it took!
We finally arrived at the job around 9:00 to some light rain but cool temperatures. That cleared up after about an hour and it started to get hot which took some getting used to! Since yesterday we had gotten a head start on the one house, we split up into two teams, one working on the floor of the first house and the other starting on the second. We built the floor and roof trusses and headed back to the mission for lunch.
After lunch we headed back to the job site, the one team of guys got their house quite far, 3 walls were up and sheeted, we got our floor finished and the corner posts squared, as well as most of our roof trusses built. Around 3:30 pm we headed back to the mission, most of the team went down to the ocean to cool down for a bit.
At about 4 o’clock we regrouped at the mission to do some home visits and give them food. On our way to the locals houses our truck was not running good and shut off at the bottom of a hill. Fortunately for us we saw the mission shuttle bus and waved it down. We swapped vehicles and carried on our way to visit the homes we had scheduled.
One of the houses we went to was a small two room house consisting of a kitchen and a bedroom where eight people had to live. We gave them boxes of food and supplies and they were very appreciative of it. A young girl from this family was injured in a motorcycle accident and she had no access to medical assistance. With the funds raised we are hoping to get her to see a doctor. After the home visits we drove back to the mission to eat a delicious chicken dinner. This wrapped up the adventures of our day and we called it a night.
