Uncharted School of Discipleship - March 2017 | Hungry For Life

March 2017: ,

A group of seven students and their teacher Mike Smith visited Nueva Florida for two weeks. Mike had been to the same location a few years ago with students from the first year the School of Discipleship started. The team reconnected with folks in Nueva Florida, introducing the students to a whole new world.

Additional items accomplished:
  • Carefully observed how Pastor Mario and his team effectively encourage, equip and meet the needs of those in his community; much without outside financial support.
  • Supported Cristo Centro Penasquitos in the purchasing of food, preparation of food and distribution of food for 80+ children on six separate occasions.
  • Distributed purchased food to the elders of the community (those who are unable to work).
  • Purchased the construction materials to repair the cistern built in 2014, and assisted in the repairing process.
  • Taught a total of 9 hours of Truth Centered Transformation classes to a group of about 30 local men, women and youth.
  • Painted the inside and outside of the schoolhouse/kitchen that the team built in 2015.
  • Taught and interacted with the children daily.

Team Testimonials:

“What’s impacted me the most is just seeing how the church works. It is the place to be for the whole community. It’s where the kids come to be fed, the youth come to be trained, and the adults come for community.”
“To visit, serve and bring food to some of the elders in the village really impacted me. They have so little, but their hearts are full. I’ll never forget it.”
“Here the church really lives out the Gospel. They take food to the widows and the elderly. They teach the children and help them achieve in life, while also showing the truth of God’s word. I am going to take this experience back to the U.S. We need to get out of our church buildings and start serving our community like they do here in Honduras.”
“I sponsor a girl here, and having the opportunity to return to Honduras and get to know her and love on her and watch her grow up has been so incredible to me.”
“I am in awe at how quickly a group of people I barely met became like family to me. I genuinely love these people and cannot wait to return to visit them.”

Last day in Honduras

So today was our last day with the kids and the church, and with being here before, I can now officially say that it is much harder saying goodbye the second time. Today was a mix of happy and sad, tears of joy and tears of sorrow, full of hugs and kisses, and memories to never be forgotten.

Day 13 - The universal language of dance and smiles

Good evening friends and family! Today was a great day. We started out the morning with breakfast, as usual. Pastor Mario picked us up a bit late this morning, but no complaints here because we got to talk as a group.

So today is my turn to share about the events of today, but also a little that has been going on personally. About half way into our stay here I get an urgent call from home.

Day 10 - Breaking through the wall

Today started out a bit rough for me. Yesterday I got a bad sun burn from the beach, so today I was in pain. If I'm being honest, my attitude was not great starting out this morning. I had began to hit my wall, and it was hard to push through.

Day 9 - Sunburns, bruised feet and full hearts

Today was our day off. On past trips, our team has spent our day off lounging at a beach-front resort—exclusive and expensive. Private pools, private beach and margaritas (virgin of course). Although it is always a great time, we wanted to try something different this year.

Day 8 - God's family

It is so nice to be back in Honduras. This first week has been a blast and I am so excited for this coming week. It has been so amazing seeing everyone again. It really feels like no time has passed since I was last here.
