Thursday morning saw us getting up bright and early; before the sun was up or the birds chirping their mornings song. Most of us had had a fitful night’s sleep and not at all ready to rise. According to local tradition, far into the night, there had been the beating of drums, the chanting of songs preceding the funeral of one of community women which had kept us awake.
Only 7 minutes behind schedule we were off to the Kisumu airport to catch our flight to Nairobi. We did not mind in the least that the flight was smooth and the trip uneventful. A welcome change from our previous journey. It was hard to leave Julia and Maggie behind who had taken such good care of us as well as Everlyne and Aggrey who so lovingly look after our VOH women, and our patient driver Nelson.
After a filling lunch at Shalom Guest House we bundled off to see Martha and her Shiphra home full of little ones.

While we were there, a bunch of us had tea & chipatas while visiting with Martha and Ava while Kierra, Linda and I played outside with the kids who were home. Bubbles, a soccer ball and 2 skipping ropes kept all the kids occupied for a couple of hours. It was amazing to see how well behaved the kids were and how they helped each other out so lovingly - the older ones naturally assisted the little ones, and they all made sure everyone was included. Once the last 20 or so kids came home from school, Mary read them a story and then they all enjoyed decorating bookmarks with stickers! All too soon it was time to say good bye and head back to Shalom House for dinner.
