The quake that struck on Jan. 12, 2010, reduced much of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, to rubble. More than four years after the earthquake, the pressing need for safe, stable housing for all displaced people remains largely unmet. Hundreds of thousands remain in increasingly wretched tent camps; tens of thousands dwell in dangerously damaged buildings. Oxfam states that approximately 500,000 people are still living in displacement camps.

Clean, decent and stable housing provides more than just a roof over someone’s head, it is vital for the stability of families and children, a sense of dignity, health, safety, and security. Years after the massive earthquake, inadequate housing remains in Haiti; therefore, increasing the supply is essential. The Village de Cana project addresses the country’s most urgent crisis. United Christian International (UCI) plans to provide a variety of affordable rental housing units in Caiman: two and three bedroom units and apartment guesthouse. They also want to raise the local standard of homes to show what is possible. Every one of the villagers living around Caiman knows of a relative or friend in Port-au-Prince desperate for proper housing and willing to return if it is available. Village de Cana is expected to consist of 24 homes and 12 apartments. The project will also generate a regular income to help fund the compassion and church ministries of UCI.

Latest update

4 village homes complete

Four more homes have been completed in the Village de Cana site at UCI!  These much needed homes will be utilized for professor housing to support the University.  A small solar electrical system as well as basic plumbing was installed in these homes to raise the standard of living a bit and help retain quality professors at the University.
