Fuente de Esperanza (Source of Hope) is the only primary school in the community of Membrillal. The staff and board have a vision to provide a high standard of quality education for students from grade 1 to grade 6. The school has a feeding program for students, providing two balanced meals per day during the school week. For some children this is their main source of food. The school is open 11 months of the year.

A new year begins
Due to the impact of the Corona Virus in Guatemala, all classes were suspended in mid March and remain closed now at the end of September.
The staff of four teachers, two cooks, secretary and director of the school are on location every two weeks to distribute food hampers to the families and to provide homework packages and instruction to the parents so that students can work from home.
Video teaching was ruled out as internet is only available by phone in this area and most families cannot afford to purchase data packages through the month.
A highlight of this time was the annual celebration of Guatemala's independence when the students learned more about their history, the patriotic symbols of the flag, the flower, the tree and the national bird the quetzal. Families celebrated in their homes with special meals and dancing and reciting poetry.
The school year ended in October. Eleven students in the sixth grade graduated and will be leaving the program to study the public school or in institutions where the next level of education is available.
