Heading

Our day began bright and early with a 6:00 a.m. wake-up and a delicious breakfast sandwich before everyone headed off in different directions.

Some of our group travelled to a village to help build another community centre, while others worked on a new shelter for a family. I somehow got “stuck” fishing with five other guys! With six of us in a small boat powered by a 15-horsepower motor, we ventured about 4.3 miles out to sea and caught some great fish.

We also returned to the prison, giving those who hadn’t yet visited an opportunity to see the conditions firsthand. It was a deeply sobering experience. The conditions are inhumane, and we heard stories of people facing prolonged imprisonment for minor offences, with little hope of release. It was heartbreaking to witness. The warden shared a few more projects he hoped we could help fund to improve conditions.

We headed back to the compound for a wonderful lunch of chicken sandwiches before hopping on our bikes and riding to the beach. Just as we arrived, a short downpour greeted us—but they always say you should shower before swimming!

The beach was beautiful, tucked into a small cove with starfish along the rocky ledge and seashells scattered everywhere. We enjoyed swimming, spending time together, and taking in the surroundings before riding back.

After a short recharge, we headed out to watch a soccer game. Barrack, the local missionary’s son, works with youth through soccer, sharing the gospel and providing meals. It was encouraging to see how a game can bring young people together and create opportunities for connection and support.

We finished the evening with dinner at Bei Poze restaurant, grateful for a day filled with meaningful work, new experiences, and time together. The beauty of the island and the difficult realities we witnessed will both stay with us long after this trip.
