We left our hotel in Bogotá, Colombia bright and early, bags packed and anticipation high, ready to begin the next leg of our journey. After a few delays at the airport, we were finally airborne—and it was well worth the wait. The flight into Cusco was nothing short of spectacular, with breathtaking views of the Andes stretching endlessly beneath us. High mountain peaks and deep valleys set the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable week.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Mila from ATEK, who will be guiding and accompanying us throughout our time here. It was immediately reassuring to have her friendly face greeting us as we stepped into a new country and culture.
The altitude made its presence known right away. Cusco sits at around 11,000 feet above sea level, and you can definitely feel the difference in the air. Even simple movements require a bit more effort, but thankfully everyone in our group is adjusting well so far.
After a quick orientation at the guesthouse, we headed into the old city to begin exploring. The streets of Cusco are alive with history—narrow cobblestone roads, ancient stone walls, and vibrant markets filled with local artisans. We spent time browsing and bartering with locals, picking up a few souvenirs and enjoying the lively atmosphere.
One of the highlights of the evening was sitting down to an authentic Peruvian meal. For many of us, it was our first time trying alpaca steak—a unique and surprisingly delicious experience that added to the sense of adventure.
As the day came to a close, we found ourselves both tired and grateful. There’s a deep sense that this week will be meaningful, not just for the places we’ll see, but for the people we’ll meet. We’re especially looking forward to visiting the remote communities that ATEK partners with and gaining a deeper understanding of the work being done there.
