Education is one of the most powerful tools to transform people’s lives and lift communities from poverty. However, in many rural areas, children face significant challenges in accessing education.
While most batey villages have elementary schools, high schools are often regional and can require up to a four-hour round-trip walk each day. As a result, many students are unable to attend school daily and instead go only on certain days of the week.
Access to a bicycle dramatically improves this situation. With reliable transportation, students are able to attend school every day and even participate in extracurricular activities, such as sports.
Bicycles are an affordable, easy-to-use, and safe mode of transportation. They are especially well-suited for rural areas where public transportation is limited or nonexistent.
There are an average of 15 eligible children per Batey, with around 400 bateyes across the country, there are 6000 eligible children. Together with several donors from Canada, Proinfancia has a goal to distribute bicycles to all 6000 eligible children over the next 5 years.
