I love attending church in communities outside of my own. It is always so rich to be in a faith community where, even though culture, language, time, and space divide us, we are connected through faith. I feel that connection deep in my soul, and it brings me great joy.
We were blessed to join the worship service at a little church, under the umbrella of the Christian Missionary Alliance denomination, here in Batey Vasca. The singing was soulful, and the message on the prodigal son, its lesson of grace and true life change, tied in beautifully with what EVE has been sharing in this community. We left church feeling uplifted and joyful, in great anticipation of spending more time with the community.
Sunday’s activities, however, did not end with church. Our team enjoyed a delicious meal with women from the community. We have been welcomed with such generous hospitality that I feel humbled and honoured at the same time. Following lunch, we led an education session about women’s health. We asked the ladies in the group if they had ever received a formal lesson on female health, and 99% of them had not. Our goal was to inform and educate these women about their bodies so they would have knowledge to care for themselves and pass on to their children.
But beyond education, our goal was also to share that these women are valued and precious—that we can be proud of our bodies and how they are designed. After all, 50% or more of the world is made up of women. We were united in our womanhood, and this helped break down barriers. I truly believe our goal of affirming and showing love was accomplished, although there was a moment when we had to navigate cultural norms around discussing this subject with our male translators in the room.
Following the women’s health session, we had the opportunity to partner with the church to show tangible love through the gift of essential provisions to 5 families in Batey Vasca. These home visits always move me deeply and stir many emotions. The injustice of some situations is hard to comprehend...grief, sorrow, and anger can threaten to overtake me. Yet as we hear stories of resilience, share smiles of joy in prayer and blessing, and offer love in practical ways, there is also restoration. And gratitude. And love.
I am thankful for the many experiences of today, of this trip, and especially for this team. We ended our night by expressing gratitude toward one another, strengthening our bond and preparing our hearts for tomorrow.
Good night for us all!
Angela
