Final Reflections

According to Darren, a prototype seeks to discover and discern the issues, concerns, problems, and conditions that will eventually lead to a possible solution. Often, prototypes go through several iterations. Prototypes are tested until proven successful.

On June 5, we tested a prototype: hosting a one-day Redemptive Business Gathering in Siem Reap in collaboration with Darren and Minako Polischuk. The Gathering convened at the Common Grounds Coffee, a social enterprise of People for Care and Learning.

Our team of 9 hosted 19 participants from various backgrounds and vocations. Several key leaders from Clothed in Dignity and Made4This (founded by Minako and Darren respectively), along with local entrepreneurs, engaged in lively conversations on Redemptive Business.

The gathering featured the following presentations:
• Devotions led by Peter Quek - Redemptive Mission of Jesus (Matthew 12:15-21) and Creating Value on Purpose (Luke 5:36-39)
• Rethinking Business and Redemptive Frame (Patrick Elaschuk)
• Product and Prototyping (Darren Polischuk)

We learned the heart and character of Jesus emerged from a quiet, humble spirit of sacrificial love and compassion for the weak, broken, and vulnerable. Instead of focusing on what we have or don’t have, we learned to focus what we can create.

The redemptive frame raised our awareness of how business can go beyond making profits and ethical practices to the greater purpose of creating flourishing communities for good. Exploring creative ways to test human-centred prototypes for solving problems will lead to more resilient solutions and outcomes.

Through lively group conversations and discussions, Raju Bags facilitated thoughtful summaries of what we learned and gleaned. We collated our summary statements into short refrains that each group performed to the tune of their chosen song. What a fun way to review and express our day’s experience together.

We felt encouraged, stimulated and inspired by the stories shared and lessons learned. Indeed, there was a general consensus that the one-day gathering was valuable. Many expressed a desire for an extended gathering in the future, perhaps over three days.

After the day’s gathering, we celebrated our time in Siem Reap at a local restaurant, enjoying great food and heartfelt fellowship. We felt blessed by the missional partnership with Darren and Minako as well as new friendships with local entrepreneurs. Clearly, we believe there is exciting prospect for future redemptive business gatherings in Siem Reap.

We are now on our various ways home, taking with us many memories, so great learning, and the impactful relationships we have continued to build with the wonderful people of Cambodia. Please continue to pray for all our partners and for a safe trip home for our team.
