Our day began with an early breakfast at 6:30 AM, but what followed wasn’t the smooth start we’d hoped for. The shuttle never showed up, so we scrambled to order two Ubers. Although they were supposed to fit six people, only four seats were available. With a bit of creativity and teamwork, we squeezed in both the people and the luggage, making it to the airport just in time.
Upon landing at 10 AM, we were greeted by Najel, a local young man whose story would leave a lasting impact on us. We boarded a bus to his family’s home and store located in the slums, where we were immediately struck by the contrast between the poverty surrounding us and the generosity of spirit Najel exuded. At his small store, we bought out much of the stock to bring treats and essentials to the widows in the community. Walking through the narrow, bustling streets, we handed out sweets to children whose faces lit up with joy, a simple yet powerful reminder of how kindness can create change.
Over lunch, Najel shared his personal journey—how a serious ankle injury led to a painful infection, and how he eventually found hope and support through HFL. Moved by his resilience, we were able to contribute a donation to his father, the local pastor, helping him repair his motorcycle and restock their store.
The day continued with a two-hour drive to Distinction Gardens, where we’d stay for the next few days. We toured a local high school, learned from Silas, and ended the day with ice cream and reflections. It was a day full of surprises, but more importantly, it was a day of connection and compassion. It reminded us that, no matter where we are, small acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.
