Hello all! Coming to you live from the Dominican Republic!
We had a busy day today—building relationships with the people in the local villages and helping them with some of their tasks.
We started the day with a nutritious meal—traditional oatmeal cake and fresh fruit. A few members of the group went to the high school across the street to share advice with the graduating class. It was interesting to see the different career plans these kids have, and they were very receptive to the wisdom the group shared.
After this, the boys and girls divided and conquered the tasks that needed to be done. The guys worked at the sewing centre today, painting rebar on the roof to protect it from rusting and repairing a falling beam inside the centre. Thankfully, it was a bit cloudier in the morning, so they didn’t completely fry.
The girls headed to a local community centre and ran a VBS program for the kids. They started with making bracelets, colouring, and creating paper lion puppets to relate to the Daniel and the lion’s den Bible story that was shared. They ended the program with a few games and sent the kids off with toys and balloons.
The team met up for lunch at the sewing centre and enjoyed some social time with the people there. After a quick nap, the guys headed to the basketball courts to continue painting. Today, they worked on painting the court and the bleachers. After running out of paint, they played some basketball with some locals.
The girls went to a school in Los Alcarrizos, where they handed out the Days for Girls kits made yesterday. The girls were very excited about their new kits and loved all the colours!
The team then met back at the compound, the boys looking quite blue (the colour of the bleachers). No wonder they ran out of paint! We closed the afternoon with a small game of baseball and some delicious spaghetti and plantain.
This evening, we will keep busy playing Euchre (a team favourite) and making more memories!
Thanks for reading!
