Day two reflections

To come from a life of abundance and excess into a place where so many have so little continues to challenge us to our core. We recognize how fortunate we were to be born into families and communities filled with opportunity — something many here may never experience. And while we know we cannot bring every resource we’ve benefitted from, we feel deeply compelled to do what we can, with what we have, for the remarkable people we are privileged to serve.

Working in the medical clinic in Batey Vasca this week has been a powerful experience. Whether offering medical care or helping with intake in broken Spanish and newly learned Haitian Creole phrases, we have been welcomed with graciousness, laughter, and patience. Our goal is simple: to help people feel seen, cared for, and at ease as they enter a process that may feel unfamiliar.

It’s easy to focus on what is lacking — and yes, the needs are many. Yet there is so much hope here too. New buildings rising, including the community center where the clinic now operates. Local leaders casting bold visions for their children and families — teen girl groups, a new preschool, and more bright ideas waiting to take form.

Again today, we were humbled and honored to serve alongside an inspiring team — easing pain, treating illness, providing nourishment, and exchanging smiles and hugs with people not so different from us. The irony is clear: they thank us, when we should be thanking them. They have touched our hearts more deeply than they know.

We leave each day changed — grateful, reflective, and aware that the lessons we learn here will stay with us long after we return home.
