Our day started with a lovely breakfast at Bella Epoca B&B, just 300 meters from the Caribbean Sea, where we are staying for 2 nites. There is a beautiful view of the water from the 7th floor!!
Our journey today took us to an area on the western side of Santo Domingo, to a community called Los Alcarrizos and a visit to the Days For Girls sewing centre. We met Martha the director of ProInfancio and Fabia the supervisor of the DFG enterprise. It was great seeing their new sewing centre with their industrial sewing machines and all the ladies working at their machines.
We were quickly put to work assembling kits. I think we assembled some 500-700 kits ready for distribution. This enterprise sews and distributes with a goal of 4,000 kits per month. The ladies are paid for their sewing so is an income for their mostly Haitian, undocumented families.
Onward, in the afternoon to a church down the road for a VBS with 6-10 year old children. Sadie and Krystal led the group in action choruses, Lauri read “What Is A Little Girl Worth” (and this time the children actually listened), they did a craft of putting jewels on crowns that remind them that they are daughters and sons of God, then they played a game which involved Lauri and Dell wearing large granny pants and the children throwing snowballs into the pants. What a loud active room it was!!!
Carlos then treated us with a ride on the sky tram across Los Alcarrizos which connects to a sky train/subway to downtown Santo Domingo. Looking down and seeing the city from above gives a much deeper understanding of what poverty looks like.
Dinner together back at the b&b, a little laughter and prayer and off to bed.
