Today was another lesson in being FAT (flexible, adaptable and teachable).
Our plan was for the ladies to finish the kitchen countertops in the morning and do the kids program for grades 1-6 after school was out at 1:00 p.m. However, as is often the case, the teachers decided not to show up for school, so we did the kids VBS in the morning.
It didn’t take long for a group to gather while Sadie and Krystal practiced the Bible songs with actions. Music really seems to be a way to these kids’ hearts and the joy and enthusiasm with which they sang was a delight to see. They enjoyed colouring and filling in the books about their lives and who God is to them. All in all, it was much calmer than with the preschoolers and only one fistfight broke out! Lauri read a book to a group of girls on their worth in God’s eyes and one girl in particular was listening very intently so we pray the seeds of faith sown today will bear fruit.
We are so thankful for God’s healing hand on our team. Our translator, Jonathan, is recovering from his illness, Dell is feeling good today, and praise God Marilyn’s MRI shows that she does not need surgery although she needs to be cautious. This means she can stay with our team for the duration. PTL!
While the men poured the cement for the pre-school entrance and built a concrete wall for the pumphouse, the ladies worked on the kitchen countertops and Sadie and Krystal painted in the “baño.” A highlight for Lorne was teaching some young men from Florida how to use a shovel.
In between the physical jobs, our team paused to surround Ana with prayer as her mother’s heart was aching because of her 17-year-old daughter’s rebellion. While David and Ana work fervently to love, serve and bring the Good News to Batey Vasca, it is worrisome to see their daughter go astray. It was a privilege to help bear her burdens through prayer and Krystal was able to tell her that she and Sadie went through similar teenage struggles and now they are here serving on a missions trip!
We have one last day at Batey Vasca and although we look forward to the next adventure, it is bittersweet to leave. However, they definitely will be in our hearts and prayers always!
