Goodybe and a Safari

Today was the last day we spent at the Childcare Centre. Not much work was needed to be done as we had been very productive throughout this week so most of us went to visit three public schools in the area with the head teacher Margret. It was very eye opening to see young children sitting in dark classrooms on concrete floors and contrasting that with the brightly light and well built class rooms at the Timotheos Childcare centre and truly appreciating what a blessing this institution is to the area. While we went to those schools, Marc and Susan talked with the garden workers about what we accomplished this week and they set goals for the year ahead and made plans on how to accomplish that with the system they have in place.

When it came time to say goodbye, Margret took us to each class room and we were able to say goodbye to all the teachers and students that we had met over the week. This was very difficult for all of us as we all have made many connections and friendships with the kids throughout the school. It was a very quiet bus ride as we headed to the safari.

Around 2pm we arrived at the Majete wildlife reserve. After a quick debrief and putting our bags in our tents, we headed out on our sunset safari. Throughout the safari we saw many different animals including elephants, hippos, antelope, baboons, crocodile, vultures, warthogs, waterbuck, impala, nyala, and kudu. We then stopped to watch the sunset and we realized the marketing slogan “when the sun sets, Kuche Kuche rises” to be very accurate. It was a beautiful sight with the sun setting on one horizon and a thunderstorm with a rainbow on the other horizon. On our way back to the lodge we saw lots of fireflies, spotted eagle owls, a bark spider and a sleeping kingfisher. Now we are sitting around the table looking out over the lighted viewing area hoping to see some animals pass by whilst drinking tonic and mixer to fend off malaria.
